BEWILDERMENTS

2020-2021
Medium Format photography
Live-streamed video (8 hours)

The original photographs made for the series were taken in April 2020. During lockdown, the Spring sunshine cast the same shapes, reflections and shadows across the living room wall each day. Each photograph is a long exposure of around 30 seconds documenting the slow creep of these ephemeral shapes.

Process - Reciprocity Failure

As exposures get longer, photographic film doesn't respond as expected, requiring considerably more time to activate the chemicals for an exposure. The long exposures were deliberately not compensated to account for reciprocity failure. This required considerable "pushing" in the development of the images to balance the exposure, resulting in the exaggerated cyan and magentas as well as uneven shadows. The process intends to distort and dissect the nature of time as a reflection of lockdown life.
